Product Designer & Developer

I recently faced a complex project conflict within our team. It was clear that resolution was needed, so I took the initiative. First, I assessed the situation and realized it was beyond my control. I decided to escalate the issue to our project sponsor, who had the authority to intervene effectively.

Simultaneously, I identified a team member with expertise in the area related to the conflict. I delegated the task of gathering detailed data and potential solutions to expedite the resolution process. This allowed us to address the issue efficiently while keeping our sponsor informed.

In the end, our sponsor's intervention, combined with the team member's efforts, led to a swift and successful resolution. This experience reinforced the importance of knowing when to escalate and delegate, ensuring smoother project management.

AR App - UX/UI Architecture

Roles: Product Designer & Developer, UI/UX, Mobile App Developer, Graphic Designer.

Timeline: 3 months (Oct - Jan 2021)

Tools:  Figma, Blender 3D, Skype

Overview

In a world that's increasingly driven by technological innovation, there's a growing need for educational tools that not only inform but engage. That's where this Augmented Reality (AR) app comes into play. This app was designed to allow users to experience the intricacies of the human muscle system in motion, serving a profound purpose - to revolutionize the way we learn about and understand the marvel of our own bodies.

It featured a gallery of different action movement states, an interactive 3D view mode where the user could understand how different muscles interacted with each other while the selected motion was playing and a Detail Card screen that provide textual information about the selected muscle group.

Context

I was approached by the client to conceptualize, design and develop an AR app that would allow users obtain a deeper understanding of our own biology, fostering curiosity, and preparing a new generation for a future where education is limited only by the boundaries of imagination. The goal of the project was to design an app that would function well and look beautiful across all devices and also in the browser, following conventional mobile app structure and considerations.

Competitive Analysis

The initial phase of my design process involved conducting a comprehensive market research analysis of existing applications within the same or similar domain. This endeavor aimed to discern and extract essential attributes that facilitate seamless user navigation in addressing this potentially intricate subject matter. It also served to identify prevailing strengths and opportunities aligning with the client's requirements. Subsequently, this research needed a series of iterative analyses, laying the foundation for the phases of UI Design and Content Strategy development that would follow.

User Personas

I engaged with and conducted in-depth interviews with a number of active members of human biology enthusiast and AR app communities. This research was pivotal in gaining deep insights into their unique requirements and objectives. Subsequently, I crafted precise user personas, born from the richness of my user interactions, to provide a vivid and authentic portrayal of our users' aspirations, necessities, and behaviors within the realm of human biology. Below are examples of these.

Minimum Viable Product

Subsequently, I meticulously compiled the prerequisites, delineating the essential functionalities to incorporate into my application. My process involved collating user narratives, derived directly from my defined Personas, as well as defining the core components of my Minimum Viable Products (MVPs).

The MVP was conceived as a strategic tool, enabling me to quickly subject my initial designs to user scrutiny, thereby obtaining invaluable insights at the outset of the design journey. This approach ensured that any potential issues and user considerations were promptly identified and addressed, setting a solid foundation for the project's evolution.

User Flow Diagram

Wireframing

Leveraging my user personas, user flows, and MVPs as a guide, I sketched out wireframes. Through several productive sessions, I meticulously curated the designs that I believed best aligned with the MVP's objectives, to later transform them into interactive prototypes using Figma.

Prototype

User Testing

Employing my prototypes, I enlisted the assistance of 5 individuals from the community for remote moderated usability testing on my designs. During the testing sessions, I guided them through a set of tasks aimed at understanding their thought patterns and assessing their ability to achieve the MVP objectives. This provided a valuable opportunity to gather their feedback on what they appreciated and what didn't quite resonate with the prototype.

Following the user interviews, I carefully organized and rated the issues I identified, using Jakob Nielsen's error severity rating system. This allowed me to figure out which problems were the most critical and needed attention. From there, I came up with fresh ideas and solutions to enhance my designs, all aimed at making the user experience better in the next iteration.

I used UsabilityHub for a Preference test to figure out which font style users preferred. It turned out that a whopping 86% of users liked the design with a sans-serif font over a serif font. They found it more readable and thought it matched the app's tone better.

Flexidao | CFEscore - Custom Developed ELM microsite Development and UX Design

Roles: Product Designer & Developer, UX/UI, Web App Developer, Graphic Designer.

Timeline: 4 months (Oct 2021 - Mar 2022)

Tools:  Figma, Adobe Illustrator, VS Code, Git

Overview

FlexiDAO is a leading European climate tech startup, shaping the energy transition by providing end-to-end carbon–free energy solutions for energy buyers and sellers. For them I developed a web app for managing Energy and Emissions data in one place, helping their customers reduce time and cost for their Scope 2 reporting and inventory management.

The app features a wizard-like multi-screen form where the user inputs data about their energy usage and the app would calculate, as a result, various related parameters and display important information.

Context

In my capacity as a Product Designer, I had a dual focus: enhancing the client's experience and orchestrating a well-defined development roadmap for the app. My role extended to both designing and developing the product. I adhered to established UI design principles and conventional web design patterns throughout the process to ensure a seamless user experience.

Goal & research

The primary goal of this app is to provide users with an efficient and user-friendly platform for inputting data related to their energy usage. The app will then use this input to calculate various parameters, such as energy consumption, cost, and environmental impact. Users will be presented with clear, comprehensible information about their energy usage and receive personalized recommendations on how to improve energy efficiency. By achieving this, the app aims to empower users to make informed decisions about their energy consumption and contribute to a more sustainable and cost-effective energy usage.

Because clients were industry users, they cared less about how it looked. They were better served with a UX that provided ease of use and speed. This was the main focus during all the improvements we made.

Mockups

Style Guide

I aimed to bring the users' preferences for a straightforward user interface into the webapp. Simplicity was at the heart of the design, and this was reflected in the choice of a basic color palette. To capture the essence of eco-friendliness and positivity, I opted for shades of green, symbolizing ecology and nature, and yellow, representing the sun and light. Green is often associated with sustainability and a sense of harmony with the environment, while yellow exudes warmth, optimism, and energy. These colors not only align with the app's energy-consumption-awareness theme but also create a style and atmosphere that I aimed to instill in our users.

The chosen palette wasn't limited to just the app's UI; I extended it to the graphics as well. This added a sense of sobriety and consistency to the overall design while infusing a dynamic and fun element into the app's screens. This approach not only ensures a harmonious visual identity that "feels eco-friendly" but also provides a touch of vibrancy that resonated with our test users.

Atomic Design System

The design system is meticulously structured around the principles of Atomic Design, a well-established methodology for creating cohesive and scalable design systems. To foster a seamless transition from design to development, we have seamlessly integrated Figma mockups with a comprehensive set of front-end code naming conventions.

Within this design system, we've established a robust framework that encompasses rigorous naming conventions, fundamental core interactions, and a keen focus on scalability for all components. This ensures not only design consistency but also facilitates an efficient development process that aligns perfectly with our project's requirements.

UI / Visual Design

For this job I also worked as a UI Designer, where I created the UI components and also the app graphics. There was a lot of exploration and stakeholder management to be done. I was part of a SCRUM team with a product owner, business analyst, a tester and 4 developers.

Before sketching out wireframes, I first did an in-depth analysis of existing webapps, focusing on the use of UI elements and patterns as well as interactivity. I analyzed 3 similar UIs.
